THE SWITCH AMBASSADOR PROGRAMME
The Switch Ambassador Programme works with students who are at the highest risk of being excluded. The programme takes place at the students’ school during the school day at pre-established times. The programme focuses on improving self-esteem, resilience and well-being. This is because our research found that improving these factors, is key to successfully reducing the behaviours that can lead to being excluded.
Everyone who takes part in our programme is known as a switch ambassador. The programme focuses on helping students’ switch their attitudes, beliefs, behaviour, choices and actions. Switch ambassadors attend weekly group workshops and 1:1 mentoring sessions for a period of 12 weeks. The programme results in various outcomes such as lower exclusion rates, improved attendance, improved well-being, higher levels of self-esteem and resilience.
The group workshops cover various topics like the power of choices and growth mindset vs fixed mindset. Group discussions, team activities, games, videos and written activities are facilitated during the workshops. We use different mediums to accommodate as many different learning styles as possible.
All sessions are adapted to suit the needs of the individual. Therefore, the 1:1 mentoring sessions consist of activities which are relevant to the students’ lives, age, experience and interests. The 1:1 mentoring sessions also put the mentees preferences and needs at the centre of the sessions.
- To treat all behaviour as a form of communication.
- Ask ourselves in every interaction what is the student trying to communicate through their behaviour.
- Take into consideration the individual needs of students.
- Actively encourage students to use their voice in a positive way.
- Find out how the students feel about their lives and school rather than assume that we know the answer.
- Acknowledge what stage the students are at in our programme rather than focusing on where we want them to be.
